Cat's Eyes - Gipfel und Abgründe

Rough Trade's album of the month is a real kick in the stomach. If you let the lyrics enter your thoughts and feelings, you will be taken away to peaks and abysses. In addition to the mid-60s productions, cat's eyes debut album is often linked to, I would also draw a comparison to the likes of Broadcast.

"cat's eyes are a duo formed by rachel zeffira, a canadian opera soprano and classical multi-instrumentalist based in london, and faris badwan, the singer from british psychedelic-rockers the horrors. in the collision of their two very separate worlds, something magical has come into being. cat's eyes eponymous debut album is a romantic pop masterpiece fit to dine at the same table as mid-'60s productions by phil spector, joe meek or shadow morton, but with a fiercely modern, experimental premise, which constantly leaves you wondering just what you're listening to, and how on earth it was created."

Nicolas Jaar - Space Is Only Noise

Most beautiful!!! Entire Album streamed here.
Und ein schöner Zündfunk-Artikel.

Friction Fest zum Durchklicken

You might want to check out the line-up of this festival for heavy music in berlin. Also you can check out the concert dates of some of the bands in other cities. The acts are not equally convincing. I like the first impressions of The Electric Wizard and the remixes by Touchy Mob (some wrote: "so much more than a simple remix").
Not reaaaaalllly heavy, I would say. For heavier frictions than Friction Fest check out Kevin Drumm or Genghis Tron.

Hidden in the wall of sound - new Panda Bear album Tomboy

Animal Collective has been one of the biggest alternative hypes of the last years. Animal Collective sum up to an enormous knowledge of past music and once had the courage to invent entirely new approaches e.g. as regards structures of music. I was stunned by the first live performance I was lucky enough to witness in 2005 (Berlin Festival). What started as an animal (!) imitation only very slowly and magically turned into something musical. In 2009 though I had mixed feelings about the second performance I witnessed. The music did not always unfurl its inate substance and beauty. Also have I rarely seen such a disparate crowd - some wanted to dance their heads of, others to listen quietly, some wanted to talk, chat sing along others to contemplate. A lot of discussions on how to behave were going on during the concert.
One of the reasons for this ambiguities might be the focus on blurry sound promoted by Noah Lennox. Is that really a genius sound concept or is it just a hackneyed way to hide half-baked ideas within a wall of sound? A good part of the answer probably depends on the sound of your stereo or especially the mixer of a given live gig.
Anyway Lennox aka Panda Bear publishes his second solo album Tomboy soon. Already now it is streamed on NPR first listen until April 12th. The comments on the site are, of course, ambiguous.
